Utopisk sosialisme er et begrep som brukes for å definere de første strømningene innen moderne sosialistisk tenkning, slik det blir eksemplifisert av arbeidet til Henri de Saint-Simon, Charles Fourier og Robert Owen, som inspirerte Karl Marx og andre tidlige sosialister. Imidlertid ble visjoner om imaginære ideelle samfunn, som konkurrerte med revolusjonære sosialdemokratiske bevegelser, sett på som ikke forankret i samfunnets materielle forhold og som reaksjonære.
Utopisk sosialisme oppstod på begynnelsen av 1800-tallet, en tid med stor sosial uro og økonomisk endring, som en reaksjon på urettferdighet og ulikheter i perioden. Begrepet ble skapt av Karl Marx og Friedrich Engels i "Det kommunistiske manifest" for å skille deres ideer fra de som trodde at sosial harmoni kunne oppnås gjennom administrative og filantropiske tiltak uten å endre de grunnleggende strukturene i samfunnet.
Utopiske sosialister trodde på menneskets iboende godhet og mente at folk kunne leve i fred og harmoni hvis de bodde i et riktig organisert samfunn. De foreslo modeller for ideelle samfunn eller utopier, der eiendom skulle deles, og rikdom skulle fordeles rettferdig. De trodde at slike samfunn kunne etableres fredelig, gjennom gradvis overtalelse av folk og demonstrasjon av fordelene ved en samarbeidsorientert livsstil.
Henri de Saint-Simon, en fransk sosial teoretiker, blir ofte sett på som faren til Utopisk Sosialisme. Han foreslo en industriell regjering der industrielle ledere skulle kontrollere samfunnet, og trodde at vitenskap og teknologi kunne løse sosiale problemer. Charles Fourier, en annen franskmann, foreslo et system med selvforsynte samarbeid eller "falanxer" basert på et komplekst system av arbeid og belønning. Robert Owen, en walisisk industriherre, forsøkte å sette Utopisk Sosialistiske prinsipper ut i praksis ved å etablere samarbeidssamfunn, mest kjent New Lanark i Skottland og New Harmony i Indiana, USA.
Tross deres idealistiske mål, ble utopiske sosialister ofte kritisert for deres mangel på praktisk gjennomførbarhet. Marx og Engels, spesielt, argumenterte for at deres ideer ikke klarte å ta opp klassekampen og behovet for en revolusjonær endring i samfunnet. Utopisk sosialisme gradvis ga vei for mer revolusjonære sosialistiske ideologier på slutten av 1800-tallet. Imidlertid har deres ideer hatt en varig innvirkning og fortsetter å påvirke debatter om kapitalismens og sosialismens natur og fremtid.
