Increasingly frustrated, more Ukrainians appear to be opening up to the idea of a negotiated peace, even as they remain vague about what that means. In mid-July, a survey by the Ukrainian independent media outlet ZN.UA found that about 44 percent of Ukrainian civilians favored starting official talks with Russia. On July 23, the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology released a poll showing that nearly a third of Ukrainians would agree to cede some territory to Russia to end the war. That’s more than three times as many as the year before. In Ukraine, the third year of the war is grueling: The Russians are inching forward every day, and Ukraine has been unable to mount a successful counteroffensive since 2022. The country has been beset by frequent power outages and a growing death toll.

US and EU diplomats are holding urgent discussions around the Middle East in a race to try to head off the threat of a full-blown regional war after Israel targeted Hizbollah and Hamas leaders in Beirut and Tehran. eThe western diplomatic pressure comes as fears over a broader regional conflict soared as Iran and Hizbollah separately vowed to avenge the attacks.Officials said the talks were focused on convincing Tehran to either not respond or to carry out symbolic action, after Israeli diplomats told western interlocutors that their military did not plan further operations.“Everyone since last night is putting pressure on Tehran to not respond and to contain this,” said one western diplomat involved in the discussions.“Washington’s ability to shape events is likely to be rather limited,” said Jonathan Panikoff, a former senior intelligence officer who is now director of the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative. “In the immediate term, Iran, Hizbollah, and Hamas’s responses to Shukr and Haniyeh’s deaths will drive the likelihood for a regionalised war or reversion to tit-for-tat attacks,” he added. Vice President Kamala Harris’ race took center stage in a combative back-and-forth exchange with former President Donald Trump during a panel discussion Wednesday at a gathering of Black journalists in Chicago. “I did not know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now wants to be known as Black,” Trump said.“I respect either one," he added, "but she obviously doesn't, because she was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden, she made a turn and she went she became Black.... Somebody should look into that too.”It was in response to a question about the appropriateness of some Republicans saying Harris is a “DEI hire,” a term referring to workplace policies promoting "diversity, equity and inclusion." It has increasingly been used by some on the right to discredit people of colorwith opposing political views.

Iran has accused Israel of assassinating Hamas’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh in a strike in Tehran and vowed to avenge his death as the attack dramatically raised the risk of a further escalation of regional hostilities.Haniyeh was killed in a strike on his residence in Tehran in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Hamas and Iranian officials said.Qatar, which has been one of the lead mediators with Hamas during the negotiations to free Israeli hostages held in Gaza, said Haniyeh’s killing was a “heinous crime and dangerous escalation”.Israel did not claim responsibility for Haniyeh’s death and typically neither confirms nor denies assassination attempts in Iran. But Israeli officials have previously said they would hold all Hamas leaders accountable for the group’s October 7 attack on southern Israel. On Wednesday, Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant said: “The operation tonight in Beirut was precise and professional. We do not seek war, but we are preparing for all possibilities.”
